Thanks for visiting my diary. I've been journaling since 1984 and have chosen to share some of my entries online. They are not all positive thoughts, but I hope that reading them might be a blessing to someone who needs encouragement.

If you are just coming to my diary for the first time, please read my introductory entry, where I share some background that is important if you plan to follow this diary regularly.

Please also visit my music page, where you can hear samples from my debut CD, I Believe, which features songs written based on experiences shared in this journal.

SARAH'S SCRIBBLINGS

flying after September 11

Dear Ciara,

The Federal Aviation Administration has now limited passengers to one carry-on bag and one purse or brief case. My first reaction to this was to think that I'd have to scale down my packing a bit. My next reaction was to wonder just what I might eliminate from my typical packing list. I bought a new laptop carrying bag last spring which is actually more like a laptop suitcase with places for notebooks and other related items. This is probably a good thing. Many people take laptops on their trips, so this is not really an unusual thing.

What is unusual is the amount of medication I have to carry with me. I joke with nurses when they ask about my medications; I say, "Just call me Walgreens." I have four inhalers and a bottle of pills for asthma, two allergy medications, three migraine medications, three eye drops, and Advil for pain relief. I'm not exactly the picture of health.

What is also unusual is the fact that when I take a trip I am also packing for a dog guide. Usually this means carrying a feeding dish, up to a week's supply of food, grooming tools, and atoy or two to use during down time. This may not all sound like much, but 16 servings of dog food can make for a lot of bulk in thebag. During the summertime, I can usually get it all into one bag. During the wintertime, my clothes add a lot of bulk. I have been blind since infancy and have traveled with dog guides since 1991. For me, packing for the dog is a routine; but the new FAA regulations make me realize that I cannot eliminate things from my packing list as easily as some people can.

On October 27, I will be flying to New Jersey for training with a new dog. The weather there is not very consistent at thid time of the year. In the mornings it might be below freezing, in which case I woulw wear layers and a coat out on the morning walk. However, it can heat up quickly, and those layers have to come off- -and, of course, they have to be carried. Most importantly, though, I have to pack several kinds of clothing.
